10/10/2010: The True Nature and Purple Elephants
Initial silence is followed by spiritual instruction on the nature of the Self, the illusions of misidentifications, and freedom from delusion by Self-inquiry. Dialogues on Self-Knowledge, experiences and Reality, Self-inquiry, destruction of ignorant tendencies, the absurd illusory nature of ignorance, transcendence of the body, prana, and mind, “presence” and other topics. Concludes with a recitation in Sanskrit and English of verses from Ashtavakra Samhita.
Quote from Satsang:
Questioner: I’m disgusted with my habitual tendencies.
Nome: Being disgusted with a tendency is a good place to start but it is not the end. Are you disgusted by being a purple elephant? (laughter) Of course not because you not a purple elephant, you have never been one, (laughter) and you know that there is no such thing as a purple elephant. (laughter) But when you see it as pure silliness, as irrelevant to your nature, as something totally unreal, when a tendency seems like that, you are done with it. Just search out the real source of happiness. It is yourself, so search out yourself.
